Adoption on Mothers Day…

My husband and I adopted our daughter out of Foster Care.  She lived with us for years and knew us prior so there was no great trauma having her move in with us.  Her adoption was final this past February.  This is my first Mothers Day as a legal mother.  I have been her mom for years but this year I am her legal mother.  She made a book for me at school.  I can’t thank her teacher enough.  It is laminated and bound like a real book.  It will be a wonderful keepsake.   This is the cover.   In it, she talks about things she likes to do with me such as baking and games.  She writes how I make her breakfast lunch and dinner.  She writes how I give her ice cream.  Really cute things!

There were two pages that really spoke from her heart.  Only a child that came from Foster Care can really understand these.  One speaks from the heartbreaks in her past.  Her biological parents not keeping their promises.  Not keeping her safe.  Not being what a parent should be.  She spells it out very clearly.

The second is her need to feel loved.  Every human needs love.  It is the way we are wired.  Children need it even more so!   I am hard on her but she knows it comes from a place of love.  I push her to be her best.  But she knows it comes from a place of love.  She knows her daddy and I would do anything for her!  She knows she is loved.  We tell her as much as we can.

So to all the moms out there….Foster, Step, Birth, Adopted….Happy Mother’s Day to you.  I am looking forward to this path as Little Girl’s mother and I don’t’ take that charge lightly.
