Mom Life

Self Care…

Self-Care…

Self-care is not a dirty word.

We have all seen the buzzword “self-care.” It is usually followed by a woman in a fluffy white robe with cucumbers on her eyes sipping a fruit infused drink while getting a pedicure or the extreme opposite of a mom with a kid on each hip, diaper bag weighing her down and looking frazzled and exhausted. To me, self-care is not the first picture but yet is badly needed before the second picture.

I did a little self-care over the weekend. I went to a strip mall nail place and turned my ogre winter feet into something that won’t get me tagged by Fish and Game. The next thing I did was spend the day with some amazing women. In January I signed up for an Acts 29 training conference. I did not know all it entailed but a day away sounded good. Little did I know at the time it would have been part of my self-care. Saturday I got up and put on adult clothes. Did a little makeup and headed out the door.

The day started with a long drive with my best friend to the conference. Chatting and driving. Perfect! Then the conference, sitting with amazing women from my church united in mind with women from all over New England. A wonderful morning with meetings and then a tremendous lunch. Over lunch great conversation with my church tribe. After lunch a few more meetings then the reverse trip home.

To some, this may not be self-care but to me, it was just what I needed. I felt recharged. I felt human. I felt refreshed. Self-care can be as simple as a phone call to a fellow momma friend,  or a day driving with your oldest friend. It can be a trip to the spa or it can be a trip to Target. I had always seen self-care as a dirty word. It seemed selfish. Why, because we are moms. We are supposed to have it all together. We are supposed to be able to do all and handle all. At least that is what we are programmed from television and social media.

So momma’s give yourself a break. Allow yourself to self-care. Take the time you need to recharge. It will not look like my self-care because it is you and what you need to recharge is not the same as what I need. Perhaps you will need to take some time to focus on relaxing. I’ve heard a lot of women say that taking a nice bath is one of the best self-care methods, so maybe that is something that more women should try. After spending some time in the bath, you should feel a lot better. Self-care should be a priority. We are all in this together. Let’s stop judging and start caring. For ourselves and for others!
