Mom Life, View from the chair

She has your eyes…

She has your eyes…

I was at a friends birthday party this past weekend.  It was in another state at a lovely, local eatery.  I sat at the end of a long table next to my husband.  I was chatting with two sisters.  One next to me and the other across from me.  We were making small talk and the topic of children came up.  I, of course, told her all about Little Girl.  She asked to see a picture.  I grabbed my phone and scrolled through and found her school picture.

The lovely woman looks at it and smiled.  She said, “she has your eyes.”  I was going to go share that she was adopted and begin that tale.  I had the story already processing in my mind but then stopped.  I simply said, “thank you.”  I told her we were pretty lucky.  The topic moved on to other things but I tucked that compliment in my heart.

Why is this a big deal?  I realized that her adoption is one part of her story.  A big part, true, but only one part.  She plays piano, does gymnastics, is learning the books of the Bible, has great friends, has a heart of gold.  It is one small part of our family life.  I think for the first time I felt like a mother.  Not an adoptive mother, not a foster mother…just a mother sharing her kid’s picture and accepting compliments like anyone else.  We may not share genetics but you can sure guess that Little Girl has my sassiness and my husband’s sense of humor.  That comes from being a family!

  12. Sweet post! Family is actually everything, whether blood related or not.

  13. Biological or adoptive, your that little girls mom and that’s what’s most important! I think it’s so awesome that you’ve been able to open your heart and adopt a child!

  14. Beautiful. That was a true compliment. Sometimes forced ones are the ones where we need to give a back story, but having your eyes, is definitely something you and your daughter could share.

This is simply beautiful and touches my heart.

  16. Hey 🙂
You don’t have to tell it to anyone hmm 🙂
If she heard that, she will also get upset. Plus, um sure you will be a great mother for her by reading your words 🙂
Can you give my loving regards to your daughter? 🙂
Hmm.. That’s wonderful to hear that she plays Piano 🙂

Happy blogging. Hope to read your stories again 🙂

  17. I think you did the right thing to accept the compliment and not share that she was adopted. You are now her mother and you’re nurturing her in your own way, that’s what’s important.

  18. Maybe that’s what your friend was seeing in her eyes…the love that you have for each other. So genetics or not, that binds you to each other, into one family. Lovely story and happy for you.

  19. This story touched my heart! She is adorable 🙂

  20. Eyes sparkle and have life! I’m quite sure that she gets those from you 🙂

  21. This is such a beautiful story. You are her mom in every way.

  22. What a compelling story! Although you are not blood-related, you have something deeper than that.

  23. Hi Tracy, I hope you’re having a good day. I LOVE how proud you are with your little girl and how proud you are of how she is growing up. Family doesn’t have to be biological, but are people who make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Thank you for sharing your story with us. It’s truly heartwarming.

This is beautiful. I have a motherly relationship with a woman who is also not my biological mother. People say we favor as well. It’s a wonderful feeling to be connected in that way.

Adoption is a wonderful way to grow your family. Blood related or not, she is yours and is your source of joy, you are her mother and her source of strength and comfort. Lovely story!
