Solo child…

I overheard a conversation with Little Girl and her friend. Her friend told her she was an only child.  Little Girl was adamant that she was not.   They went back and forth and then I set the record straight.  She is not an only child.  She has biological siblings.  We adopted Little Girl a few weeks ago and she has lived with us for 3 years prior.  There are no other kids in our home but she is not an only child.  My husband and I  have coined the term “solo child.”  She is a solo child in our home.  Many children in foster care or who have been adopted are solo children.  They have siblings that live in other homes.  This can also be seen in blended families.  Mom has a child full time and stepdad brings a child only on the weekends.  A solo child is a child who lives as the only child in a home 50% of the time or more but do in fact have siblings either step or biological.  I know of a family who has 3 grown children then the surprise of all they found out they were expecting the day they packed up their last child to go to college.  They had a solo child.  I think there could be a whole branch of psychology that could study solo children!  All families are special and each one has their own stories.  I am just trying to make the world a little easier for my solo child.

Do you know of a solo child?   When this hits big remember you heard it here first!

  1. This is so sweet! I’m sure there are a ton of confusing moments like this for little girl, but y’all seem to be handling it so eloquently!
